Timing the release of a new console is the most strategic decision for the three suppliers. As it turns out Nintendo’s launch of its Switch was best to take up the extra demand due to the pandemic in 2020. Microsoft and Sony decided to launch their respective PS5 and xBox X/S platforms in 2020. While their more ‘backward compatible’ approaches didn’t hinder their surging software sales in the year, they could have been even more successful if they’d acted faster.
The two new console shipments have been supply-limited, but sales will increase significantly in 2021. In total I forecast sales of over 55 million in the year.
