I’m proud to have seen the potential of cloud computing way back in 2008. Spending growth has been continuously high in every year since then; it will reach a new high of $430 billion in 2022; however – at 15% – this will be the smallest annual growth since the inception of the market. It’s a victim of its own success to a certain extent and much of the news through the year will be in how cloud is better integrated with on premise and ‘as a service’ purchases. There are still many proprietary features, high on- and off-boarding data costs and significant differences to iron out.
Of the three types of offering Software as a Service (SaaS) will see the highest growth (18% to 206 billion), while Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) will each grow by 13% to reach $140 and $84 billion respectively in 2022.
